This course is a special collaboration with Fifth Element Education, a collective of hip-hop artists and educators dedicated to providing workshops and clinics for school districts and universities. Their mission is to inspire, create, and elevate hip-hop culture.
Course Description
Hip-Hop – Beatmaking and Type Beats is a 2-hour course designed for teachers to learn how to engage with beatmaking using SoundTrap, a free, cloud-based digital audio workstation (DAW) that is compatible across a wide range of devices and operating systems. Teachers will learn the basics of beatmaking, walk through project ideas to get started with their students, learn strategies for mixing and balancing beats, and learn 7 type beats with a PDF handout created by TrainingToTeach for students and teachers. The PDF is available as a download at the end of the course and can be used in the classroom.
Course Objectives
During the course, you will:
- Learn how to create 7 different “type beats” in SoundTrap.
- Learn how to improve beats through mixing and effects.
- Learn 3 beginning projects to get students started with beatmaking.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Teach their students how to create a variety of beats.
- Use a digital audio workstation to create, mix, and arrange music.
- Understand foundational music technology terminology.
Requirements for Modules
In order to receive a Certificate of Completion and 2 hours for this course, you will need to:
- Complete 4 Learning Modules.
- Take 2 multiple choice or matching quizzes (Modules 1 and 3).
- Submit a short written response at the end of Module 4.
