Course Description

Teaching music in any capacity can present several challenges, but building relationships with your students should never be one of them. Empathy and sympathy are not the same and while growing relationships with your students, it’s important to deprogram your implicit or overt biases. In this workshop, Eric and Justin provide solution-based strategies to establish, foster and nurture relationships with your students.

Course Objectives

During the workshop, you will:

1. Learn how to grow relationships with your students by deprogramming your implicit or overt biases.

2. Learn how relationship building with your students should not rely on both empathy and sympathy-based approaches.

3. Learn solution-based strategies to build relationships with your students.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

1. Identify and deprogram any biases you have as a teacher by practicing making deposits with your students.

2. Learn how to build real and authentic relationships with your students by brainstorming new ideas.

3. Apply solution-based strategies in your classroom by establishing, fostering and nurturing relationships with your students.

Eric Jimenez

Eric Jimenez is a music education consultant, podcaster, and the owner of Revival Music Project LLC. With over 12 years of experience, Eric has revitalized band programs throughout Houston, increasing student participation and morale while earning Division I and "Best in Class" ratings at UIL and numerous other festivals. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field, Eric has received numerous awards, including Hamilton Middle School's Teacher of the Year in 2012, LULAC-Educator of the Year in 2015, and a Grammy Educational Award for his work at Davis HS in 2015. In 2016, he was named one of Prairie View A&M University's top 40 under 40; in 2021, he was recognized as one of Yamaha's top 40 under 40. As an active clinician, mentor, and speaker, Eric shares his expertise with arts education programs throughout the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. Eric is an influential figure in the music education community, serving as a Secretary of the City of Houston Music Advisory Board and a CMA Foundation board member. He is also affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA), Texas Jazz Educators Association (TJEA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. Additionally, he is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Justin McLean

Justin McLean is currently the Percussion Director/Assistant Director of Bands at Hightower HS and Lake Olympia MS Band in Fort Bend ISD. Prior to his appointment at Hightower he was the Percussion Director/Associate Director of Bands at Heights High School and former director of bands at Hamilton Middle School. During his time there he has received superior UIL ratings at both middle and high school, developed region band students, and a quality indoor percussion ensemble. Mr. McLean is a Texas native raised in Rosenberg, Texas a humble community right outside of Houston. Justin's love of music began at an earlier age and was heavily influenced in church through both gospel and secular artists/musicians. His ambitions propelled him to strive for excellence not only in his personal aspirations, but also in his academic/professional life. He received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Prairie View A&M University in 2011 and has had the pleasure of educating and training young musicians as a band director and percussion instructor for the past 9 years in HISD and now Fort Bend ISD. He is also devoted music director and student minister in his local church and currently pursuing a Masters Divinity degree through Reformed Theological Seminary. Justin McLean co hosts the podcast called The Score, along with friend and colleague Eric Jimenez. He is the husband to Bee McLean and the father to Lennox, Blaise, Cairo, and Ari.
