Course Description
In hopes of creating a more just and inclusive classroom culture, we are challenged to revise our curriculum and the racist and discriminatory background of some of the cultural folk songs traditionally used in our classrooms. During this workshop, we’ll review the Anti-Racist Pedagogy steps to avoid Cultural Appropriation, and examine additional resources to incorporate into our classroom instead.
Course Objectives
During the workshop, you will:
1. Define what Anti-Racist Pedagogy is.
2. Conceptualize diversity, equity, inclusion, and representation.
3. Learn about what appreciate, and don’t appropriate means.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Be able to choose better repertoire for your music classroom by applying what you learned about Anti-Racist pedagogy.
2. Create an inclusive classroom by allowing students to be able to express themselves and create playlists to show who they are.
3. Know how to bring popular music into your music classroom by asking your students what they’re listening to and browsing the musical charts.
