Course Description
The arts can be a catalyst in helping us to move forward and to effect real social change in our society and world. What you do as an educator in the music classroom can play an important role in that. In this workshop, you’ll learn how the arts have always been reflective of and responsive to the world around us and how you can continue fostering these ideas in your classroom and with your students.
Course Objectives
During the workshop, you will:
1. Realize the importance of using a philosophical perspective as a music educator.
2. Understand the six elements of teaching social justice in your music classroom.
3. Look at the differences between formal and informal early music education and why there are barriers and exclusion included in the formal.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Use the guiding principles for planning instruction by creating relevant and meaningful instruction for your students.
2. Teach social justice in your music classroom by understanding its importance and the why behind it.
3. Look at your formal curriculum by understanding how your songs and resources might cause exclusion and barriers to access.
