Course Description
In this workshop, music educators will gain understanding and strategies to better meet the social and emotional needs of neurodivergent students. It includes a brief overview of characteristics of neurodivergent students, various types of neurodivergence and definitions related to communication styles. It includes tips on structuring a safe space for these unique learners and provides insights for increased tolerance and compassion.
Course Objectives
1. You will learn how to set up a neurodivergent friendly class structure.
2. You will gain understanding of the need for concrete vs. abstract teaching modalities.
3. You will experience a variety of music activities to increase social and emotional connection in the classroom.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
1. Create a sensory based social emotional learning experience for all students in the classroom.
2. You will have at least one strategy you can use to calm a student who is highly emotionally dysregulated.
3. You will be able to identify whether a student is actually understanding you by assessing their communication style.
