Course Description
Whose stories are we sharing in our classrooms? Where do we begin on incorporating stories that reflect the students that we teach? How can we do so while still teaching musical concepts? In this session, Franklin will share strategies to answer these questions and more. Stories have transformational power and our music classrooms can be the space where we foster a love for literature and music.
Course Objectives
During the workshop, you will:
1. Learn how to embrace literature and ways to use it as a conduit to continuing education.
2. Learn about the power of a story and how they connect us to other lives different than our own.
3. Learn how representation matters in the books used in the classroom.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Think about how literature can serve a role in the general music classroom by identify 6 key steps.
2. Brainstorm ways you can use stories in your classroom by looking at the literature already available to you.
3. Understand why representation matters by choosing books where students see themselves in the stories.
