This course is a special collaboration with Fifth Element Education, a collective of hip-hop artists and educators dedicated to providing workshops and clinics for school districts and universities. Their mission is to inspire, create, and elevate hip-hop culture.
Course Description
Hip-Hop History and Culture Basics is a 2 hour course designed for teachers to learn about the genesis of hip-hop culture, the four undisputed elements of hip-hop, and the early contributors to hip-hop culture. Teachers will learn about the 1970’s and 1980’s Bronx, see authentic film and listen to music from the early 1980’s hip-hop scene, and learn about early sampling and DJ culture.
Course Objectives
During the course, you will:
- Learn how and why hip-hop emerged from the Bronx.
- Learn the four undisputed elements of hip-hop culture.
- Learn about the pioneers of hip-hop culture.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify rapping, DJ’ing, graf, and breaking from the 1970’s and 1980’s.
- Teach their students about the cultural importance of hip-hop history and culture.
- Understand creativity and value in early hip-hop culture.
