Leading with Equity: Teaching Band in the Urban Setting (30 Minutes)

Jammie N. Phillips has worked in Music Education for over 20 years. She is currently the Director of Bands at McKee Middle School in Montgomery, Alabama. New to Alabama, Phillips taught for several years in the Atlanta metro area in Georgia, where her bands were consecutively superior rated for several years. Phillips is a 2022 Golden Anniversary Award Winner for the National Flute Association, a 2019 40 under 40 honoree for Bethune-Cookman University, and 2017 Teacher of the Year Eddie White Middle, 2023-2024 District Teacher of the Year for Montgomery Public Schools, Teacher of the Month for River Region Magazine, 2024 Alabama Arts Alliance Outstanding Intermediate Arts Educator; Phillips has built a career delivering consecutive Superior & Excellent ratings for her band programs in Georgia and now Alabama. She is a National Teacher Leader for the National Association for Music Education Connected Arts Grant Project. Phillips continues to perform as the Piccoloist/3rd Flute for the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from Bethune-Cookman University with a B.A. in Music Education and an M.S. & Ed.S in Education & Administrator Leadership from Walden University. Phillips is looking forward to making a difference for band directors who graduated from Historically Black Colleges and Universities that often face different challenges. She was inspired to go into Music Education as early as 10th grade. "I noticed that all my band directors were men or white women. I wanted to be one of few black women in the profession to encourage more black girls to become successful band directors and musicians." Phillips has three growing teenagers, a cat, and a dog.
